MILWAUKEE — The Wisconsin Humane Society wants you to foster a dog over Thanksgiving--because dogs deserve a home for the holidays, too.
The organization is trying to place 50 dogs in foster homes by Thursday in its first big holiday clear-the-shelter event.
"Even if it's for only a day or two, we know that there are significant benefits for dogs' health, as well as their mental well being just to get out of just to go on a field trip," said communications director Angela Speed.
No experience needed. The organization helps provide most of the supplies. Once you sign up, you can get paired up with a pet based on your schedule or preferences.
Speed says the Humane Society fosters almost 4,000 cats and dogs throughout the year.
"It is absolutely one of the most life-saving things you can do, because not only are you helping that animal who's being fostered, but you're opening up space at the shelter for the next animal who needs help," Speed said.
Other foster families admit it can be hard bringing the pets back, but say it's worth it.
"Seeing them go off into a loving home and start their life, it makes you fee so proud because you were part of the journey," said Allie Christman, who fosters kittens from the Humane Society.
