MILWAUKEE -- As Mother Nature continues to pound Southeast Wisconsin with snow, Mitchell International Airport Maintenance crews have been working around the clock to plow and clear the runways.
Molly Spaulding and her family arrived at the airport early Monday morning to find their flight to Orlando canceled. This is her first time traveling with all four kids. Their plan is to hopefully get a flight into Tampa by the afternoon.
“We have been here all day. We got here at 8:30 a.m. so we are a little antsy,” said Spaulding.
On the ground, crews were working feverishly to make sure arrivals and departures were safe for travelers. The snow patrol airport maintenance team is made of of twenty pieces of equipment including four de-icers. When the snow was at it’s heaviest crews were making rounds every 20 minutes.
“You gotta play the wind,” said David Sweeny, maintenance worker.
The fleet of trucks follow one-another in a perfectly coordinated process but reduced visibility, strong winds and waiting for airplanes to arrive and depart made the process a little tricky. However, crews will be working well into Tuesday morning to make sure the airlines are still up and running.
