MILWAUKEE — A 24-year-old woman has been arrested in connection to the deadly shooting of a 2-year-old child on Milwaukee's northwest side
Police said the child, identified as Zymeiia Stevens, was shot near 105th and Mill Road just before 7:30 p.m. Tuesday night. She died on the way to the hospital.
Police said the circumstances leading up to the shooting are still under investigation.
A neighbor in the area said she never heard any gunshots, but heard cries for help.
"You heard a person say 'call the ambulance, a baby got shot,' and shortly the fire dept came and then the ambulance after and then shortly after that they took the baby away," said Leslie Brand.
Milwaukee Common Council President Cavalier Johnson released a statement Wednesday morning:
First, I would like to express my condolences to the victim’s family. No family should have to witness the loss of their child, nor should a child be the victim of deadly violence.
On behalf of the community, I can express the sheer outrage caused by this senseless act. In 2020 thus far, the majority of homicides have been the result of fatal shootings. The loss of life in our community from gun violence is unacceptable and I am outraged and saddened that it has taken such a young life last night.
