Nancy Johnson is a native of Chicago and former TV reporter who has worked at several stations including a stint at a Madison, Wisconsin television station. The Kindest Lie is her debut novel.
Nancy describes this novel as a story of family, love, and sacrifice at the dawn of the Obama era. The novel centers on Ruth, a successful, Ivy League-educated Black engineer searching for the son she walked away from when he was a baby to pursue her dreams. When she returns to the dying Indiana factory town of her youth to search for her son, she forms an unexpected friendship with a poor, young white boy nicknamed Midnight. The two of them find themselves on a collision course of race and class that changes both of their lives forever. Nancy will be in conversation with our own Shannon Sims via Boswell Books tonight.
