The Food and Drug Administration recently warned consumers alcohol-based hand sanitizers are being sold in containers that look like water bottles or food pouches -- some even smell like chocolate or raspberry.

The government agency says is confusing to kids and it's making it more tempting to ingest. TMJ4 News learned it's not just hand sanitizers that pose a threat.

"There's a significant increase in the number of cases of ingestions of cleaning products during this time in children," said Doctor Sadiqa Kendi. She's the Director of Pediatric Emergency Health at Boston Medical Center and Safe Kids Worldwide Medical Advisor.

"So I would argue that the biggest danger for children during this time is ingestions while they're at home -- at home for longer hours than usual," Dr. Kendi continued.

Data from the CDC show a 20% jump in calls to poison control for exposure to cleaners and disinfectants in the first three months of 2020 when compared to last year. The research shows kids less than five years old stood out when compared to the overall percentage of calls.

To keep your child safe, Dr. Kendi says keep cleaning products in their original bottles so everyone in the house knows what's inside and keep them completely out of sight.

"We know it's really, really hard to keep your eyes on especially a toddler twenty-four-seven, so by developing those habits, to keep cleaning products up and away for everyone in the household, that could be really helpful and could be life-saving," she said.

Doctor Kendi also suggests keeping the poison control number stored in your cell. It's 1-800-222-1222.
