MILWAUKEE — A heartbreaking loss at the Milwaukee County Zoo after 17-year-old Amba the tiger had to be euthanized due to serious health issues on Tuesday.
The zoo made the sad announcement on social media, writing that Amba had five offspring and displayed excellent maternal care. She even allowed zookeepers to be with the cubs when they were sick.
The median life expectancy for female Amur tigers in human care is 14.3 years, the zoo says.
"She's overcome multiple health issues, proving to us that she was never to be underestimated. We will greatly miss the matriarch of Big Cat Country," according to the Milwaukee County Zoo.
