Sheboygan police said Tuesday’s infant death has been ruled accidental.

In a news release, police said the one-year-old boy climbed out of a crib and was suffocated after getting tangled in window blinds chords.

The home is not licensed as a daycare. The caregiver says she regularly cares for her children and other children on a daily basis. Police said the victim's parents and the caregiver have a relationship beyond child care services.

“What occurred isn’t of a criminal nature and unfortunately it’s a tragic accident,” said Lieutenant Doug Teunissen with the Sheboygan Police Department.

On Tuesday, police were called to a residence near 27th Street and Center Avenue for an unresponsive child. The infant was pronounced dead at St. Nicholas Hospital.

“We’d like people to educate themselves either online or through reading on what they can do to make their home safer for infants and take a good look around their homes and businesses,” said Teunissen.
