The Wisconsin Department of Health Services is teaming up with select Milwaukee Walgreens pharmacies to offer free HIV testing.
The testing will be offered for anyone 18-years or older, with or without health insurance.
Milwaukee locations offering the service are on Teutonia Avenue, Capitol Drive, MLK Drive, Wisconsin Avenue and National Avenue.
The tests are administered by Walgreens pharmacists in private consultation rooms during pharmacy hours. Preliminary test results will be available in as little as one minute. No appointment is necessary.
One in seven individuals living with HIV is unaware that they have the virus according to the Centers for Disease Control. In Wisconsin, an estimated 1,200 people are living with undiagnosed HIV.
"Our collaboration with Walgreens will give people in Milwaukee more options to get tested quickly and confidentially," said State Health Officer Karen McKeown. "When people know their HIV status, they can take steps to keep themselves and their partners healthy."
Walgreens pharmacists are specially trained to provide counseling and support services to those who need assistance.
The CDC recommends everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 gets tested for HIV at least once.
