RACINE COUNTY — Foxconn on Thursday reiterated its commitment to creating 13,000 jobs in Wisconsin, after a report in Asia suggested construction at the company's site in Mount Pleasant would be suspended.

The Nikkei Asian Review wrote, "In the U.S., a $10 billion investment in display production in the state of Wisconsin has been suspended and scaled back as a result of negotiations with new Gov. Tony Evers, a Foxconn document obtained by Nikkei shows."

A Foxconn spokesperson called the story inaccurate.

"Foxconn is continuing its Wisconsin project," Foxconn Technology Group said in a statement. "The company remains committed to its long-term investment and creating 13,000 jobs."

"All interactions to date with Governor Evers and his team have been constructive," the statement continued.

A spokesperson for the Village of Mount Pleasant also hit back at the Nikkei Asian Review report, and said "activity continues on the site" as normal.

Bill Sustachek, who lives in Racine, said he remains optimistic about the prospect of Foxconn energizing Southeast Wisconsin's economy.

"These are good, desirable jobs and there will be good, well-educated people moving here to take them," he said.

"I think anytime somebody's bringing in that many jobs it's going to be good for the area," Sustachek said.

JoAnne Peterman, who owns Urban Trends Salon & Spa in Sturtevant, said she's a supporter of the Foxconn project and hopes to see the company succeed and grow in Mount Pleasant.

She said it would be disappointing if the Foxconn development fails to come to fruition.

"I know all the work that's been done already, the road work and all of that, that was always something I would tell my team is that Foxconn is coming in and we're going to have much more business," Peterman said.

"But it's always been in the back of my mind, whether everything would happen or not," she added.
