RACINE COUNTY — A morning crash shut down Interstate 41/94 in Racine County Wednesday and the numbers show it's been a trouble spot in the last year.

In the construction area from Drexel to Somers, Department of Transportation numbers show 12 serious crashes with injuries and 5 fatalities since January of 2019.

Drivers that use the roadway every day say they've had to learn to adjust to driving in the area and finding alternate routes with the frequent closures.

"I've transitioned from driving my normal route to checking my GPS when I'm going to a known location just to make sure I avoid whatever is happening today" says Dominic DaPra, who has lived in the area all his life.

Jim Hillard drives from Racine County to Chicago daily, and says the winter weather is going to make conditions worse. "It's been kind of hectic, kind of nerve-wracking especially when it is snowing like this you've got to be careful."

A Department of Transportation spokesperson says they are still evaluating whether this morning's incident will have an impact on the construction schedule.
