NEW BERLIN — As dangerous, life-threatening cold moves in —your home could be at risk when arctic temperatures put pressure on pipes that could lead to freezing and bursting.

“Make sure that you got insulation packed in here,” Andy Gomez, a plumber with Hartlaub Plumbing, Heating, Cooling & Electric, said.

Gomez said the subzero temperatures are a concern for many homeowners in south east Wisconsin.

“Homeowners that aren’t disconnecting their hose from the outside spigot that will cause that water line that goes through the wall to freeze,” Gomez said.

To prevent pipes from freezing and bursting, Gomez advised insulating the basement and ensuring your PVC vent is free and clear of snow.

"It's not too late. Definitely take a walk around your home look to see where that vent comes through the side wall, and just make sure that the snow is not built up around that vent," Gomez said.

Plummeting temperatures might even prompt some home owners to leave town in search of warmer climates, Gomez said to prevent any plumbing problems while you're away, be sure to turn off your main water valve before you leave town.

“[That way] if something does happen, [and] if a water line freezes you’re not going to have a constant flow of water through to the home,” Gomez said.
