WAUWATOSA — A driver in Wauwatosa lost control of their vehicle, struck a tree and then rammed the vehicle into a house, leaving only its tail end hanging out.
Wauwatosa police said the crash happened around around 12 p.m. Friday in the 6400 block of West Meinecke Avenue.
The driver of the vehicle was brought to a hospital. No one in the home was injured, WPD says.
Wauwatosa Fire Chief Barbara Cadrich tells TMJ4 that the driver lost control at a high rate of speed. Following the crash, first responders were able to pull the driver, a man, out of the crashed car.
The chief adds that the car crashed into the home's living room. The homeowners were not in the room at the time of the crash. A neighbor tells TMJ4 that a woman who lives there was in the kitchen near the back of the house.
Crews did smell natural gas, and feared the home might collapse in the process of removing the vehicle. The fire department called in a special unit with the Milwaukee Fire Department to secure the structural integrity of the home, before towing the crashed car.
According to Chief Cadrich: “This was a pretty significant, the first point of contact is back some ways so there’s definitely, we could tell a lot more speed was involved to get a vehicle that far in and the damage to the house, the structural damage did show us that there was some more speed involved than usual.“
The crash remains under investigation.
