Milwaukee Public Schools is at the forefront when it comes to offering driver’s education to students, and the classes are being offered for free.

MPS students are taking advantage of this course. The free course helps them financially, and it's really preparing them for their future.

"We really wanted to reach a point where our young people were graduating with a diploma and a valid driver's license," said MPS Coordinator for Citywide Programs Annie Kubes.

Kubes says MPS is the only district in the nation offering free drivers ed classes to students.

"It's amazing to be apart of something that is so new and provides such an amazing opportunity for our young people," Kubes said.

Because it's more than just 30 hours of sit down instruction and driving, it has positive implications for their future.

"First of all of shows a certain sense of responsibility but we know that having a driver's license extends far beyond the privilege to drive. It's the right to vote, the ability to attain a job, access to post high school educational opportunities, upwards social mobility the list goes on and on," Kubes said.

And Rufus King High School junior Hadiyah Johnson appreciates it.

"Our instructor makes it fun for us so that's it's not something we're kind of forced to do but something we have fun with doing," Johnson said.

Especially the price.

"I've seen it everywhere else where it's $150 or $135 and me personally, I don't have that in my pocket to give out so," he said.

The program is funded through MPS, the city of Milwaukee and private donations.

"That makes it easier much better for me," Johnson said.

There is $35 fee due at registration but not for the class, rather for the students temporary permit.

There are only 225 spots left for summer registration.

If you would sign up you can visit Milwaukeerecreation.net or you can register in person at 2414 W. Mitchell st. or at 5212 W. Villet St.
