Wisconsinites are gearing up for the solar eclipse that will take place on Monday, August 21st.
In southeast Wisconsin the moon will begin to move in front of the sun at about 11:53 a.m. and will peak at 1:18 p.m. The moon will cover 86 percent of the sun’s surface before the eclipse ends at 2:40 p.m.
Many museums, libraries, and local astronomy groups are hosting eclipse viewing events in our area:
Milwaukee Public Museum (Downtown Milwaukee)
- Event starts at 10 a.m.
- Special viewing glasses to share with people
- Educational displays and eclipse demos
- Live feeds from NASA
- Special telescopes to observe the sun
Manfred Olson Planetarium on UW Milwaukee campus (Corner of Kenwood and Maryland)
- Event starts at 11 a.m.
- Only NASA sponsored viewing event in the Milwaukee area
- Telescopes and special glasses for sale for safe viewing
- Enjoy live music from the Belle Weathers, food available, or bring a picnic lunch
- The event is free, but a $5 donation is requested.
Milwaukee Area Science Advocates at American Science & Surplus (69th and Oklahoma)
- Event starts at 11:30 am.
- Planetary Geoscientist Kevin Joestgen will be at the event
- American Science & Surplus will have telescopes available for viewing.
- MASA will provide limited number of solar eclipse glasses for shared use
Milwaukee Public Library Eclipse Tour (Central Library on Green Roof)
- Event starts at noon- streaming inside Community Room 1
- Glasses available to those viewing
- Streaming is available inside Community Room 1
Milwaukee Library Capitol Branch
- Event starts at noon
- Story and craft time before going outside
- Some viewing glasses available to share.
Eclipse Extravaganza at Mill Road Branch of Milwaukee Public Library
- Event starts at noon
- Astro bingo, scavenger hunt, pin the star on the constellation and food trucks
- Inside streaming of the eclipse available.
Frank Weyenberg Library – Mequon
- Event starts at noon
- 300 glasses left for their party
Big Bend Village Library
- Event starts at 12:45p.m.
- Free glasses while supplies last
Whitefish Bay Schoolhouse Park
- Event starts at 12:45 p.m.
- First 100 people get free viewing glasses
Wehr Nature Center (Whitnall Park/ Hales Corners)
- Event starts at noon.
- Some eclipse glasses available for share and for sale.
Matheson Memorial Library – Wisconsin St in Elkhorn
- Events starts at 11:30 a.m.
- Streaming available inside.
- Limited number of free viewing glasses available
