WAUKESHA, Wis. — A shooting at a hotel in Waukesha drew a large police response and sparked conflict with people who turned out to be family members and witnesses, police say.

Waukesha police said in a statement that a firearm was dropped on the ground during a fight and a woman fired one round from a handgun, hitting a second woman in the leg.

Police said the woman who fired the gun was arrested, as was a second woman.

According to police, it all started around 7:38 p.m. Monday, when officers were called to the Extended Stay motel on Plaza Court for 911 callers reporting gunshots.

Officers say when they arrived, they found a "very large crowd" of people at the motel. Police say people later determined to be family members and witnesses intentionally provided officers with inaccurate information about the shooting.

According to police: "Officers were receiving convoluted inaccurate information from highly emotional and angry people (who were later to be determined to be family member/witnesses). Witnesses and family members intentionally provided inaccurate information to officers which hindered the progress of the investigation."

Officers eventually learned that a man from Texas was working in the area and staying in the motel with another woman, who was later shot and injured in the motel. A second woman, also from Texas, brought her four children to the city to visit the man.

A fight between the two women escalated, the gun was dropped and a gun was fired, leaving the one woman injured, police said.

A total of two women were arrested, both residents of Texas.
