  • Her stepfather said he saw her cross the street and students also told police they saw her outside, but teachers said she never made it to class.

Two years ago, police thought a woman in Ohio could have been the missing person, but DNA proved that wasn't true.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children said Thursday's discovery should remind the community and Alexis’ family not to give up hope.

"A day like this is very emotional for them. While they're happy for Jayme Closs that she was recovered safely, they can't help but think of their own missing child. And we know that they're wondering and praying that they'll have the same kind of outcome with their child," said Angeline Hartmann of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

May marks 17 years since Alexis went missing. She would be 23 years old now.
