MILWAUKEE — Thousands of free flowers were given away to locals at Alice’s Garden located on 21st Street in Milwaukee.

The giveaway was part of a partnership between Alice's Garden Urban Farm, Milwaukee World Festival Inc., and Milwaukee County Parks.

Before the gates opened at 2:00 p.m. a line was wrapped around the garden as hundreds of people waited to fill a tray up of free annual flowers.

An hour and a half into the event, organizers said they ran out of flowers.

The flowers were meant to go on the Summerfest grounds but because the event is canceled this year, it was a way for community members to bring a part of the Summerfest smile back home.

Executive Director of Alice’s Garden, Venice Williams said it warms her heart to know the flowers will spread joy and happiness throughout the community.

“We are sad that we will not have festivals this summer but in the midst of a pandemic, there are still opportunities the opportunity to brighten up your neighborhood,” said Williams.

Organizers said because they ran out of flowers on Thursday, Friday’s giveaway is now canceled.
