WAUWATOSA — The Walk to End Lupus Now – Milwaukee returns to Hoyt Park on May 9th. Organizers expect hundreds of participants, representing the nearly 30,000 people living with lupus in Wisconsin.
Lupus is a chronic autoimmune disease that can attack nearly any part of the body, including the brain, heart, kidneys, skin and joints. Often called “the mystery disease,” it can present differently from patient to patient, making diagnosis difficult.

Nicole Dohnal, a board member with the Lupus Foundation Wisconsin Chapter said the event raises money for patient support programs and research for new treatments.
“I was diagnosed with lupus, but first was misdiagnosed twice with two different types of cancers,” Dohnal said.
“It took about two years before I could get my lupus diagnosis. In that time, my disease progressed into organ damage, which wouldn’t have happened if we could have gotten an earlier diagnosis,” she said.
Registration opens at 8 a.m. at Hoyt Park. Organizers say every step brings them closer to better treatments and, one day, a cure.
If you can't make it out on Saturday, Ontech Systems, Inc. and Ontech Talent is hosting a golf outing charity event, The Drive Out Lupus Charity Golf Outing on August 13.
The event is located at the Kettle Hills Golf Course | 3375 WI-167, Richfield, WI.
