County granted time extension as final 'Tent City' residents remain

MILWAUKEE — Hours ahead of its expected clearing deadline, Milwaukee's known “Tent City” has become a lot less populated.

Many of the tents have cleared, along with most residents. The Milwaukee County Housing Administration said they've worked out living arrangements for all but 30 of Tent City's 90 residents.

"We’re going to be given more time if we need it," said James Mathy, Milwaukee County Housing Administrator. "We have spots for all 30 individuals. Hopefully, they decide to come back inside."

Each Tent City resident was served a notice to vacate by October 31. However, the County has requested an extension to help relocate any remain residents.

A date on that extension has not been set.

"It's been really unique. They’ve been working with us every day. Checking in, seeing where people are going," Mathy said.

Since the notice was issued, TODAY’S TMJ4 spoke both on and off camera with residents since the notice was served. Many of them were hesitant about heading into local shelters.

Mathy said some have gotten permanent housing. Others have either stayed with friends, family, moved away or moved into shelters.

Debra Sehnert-Gonzalez spent Wednesday helping residents move from the Tent City site using her car.

"They’re still human and they deserve a place to live," she said.

Milwaukee County also opened housing assessment centers, temporary shelters with programs that help residents eventually find permanent housing.
