Acting Milwaukee County Sheriff Richard Schmidt announced his candidacy for the position on Tuesday.
Schmidt has served as acting sheriff since September.
"I am excited about this opportunity," said Schmidt in a press release. "I look forward to reviewing my accomplishments during the last eight months and sharing my plans and vision for the future. Milwaukee County can be assured I have hit the ground running and there is no learning curve to accomplish what needs to be done."
Schmidt was named acting sheriff after former Sheriff David Clarke resigned from the position.
Clarke joined a political action committee to support President Donald Trump.
