Wisconsin tallied a record number of active COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations Wednesday, even as the number of coronavirus cases and deaths fell from an all-time high the day before.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services tallied43,468 active cases and 1,439 people currently in the hospital because of the virus Wednesday. During three of the last four days, an average of 50 people have been hospitalized daily.

Meanwhile, the number of confirmed cases fell Wednesday, to 3,815, down from a record of 5,262 on Tuesday, according to DHS numbers. The seven-day average number of cases also dipped to 3,919 Wednesday, down from a high of 4,050 average cases recorded last Saturday.

Wisconsin also recorded the third-highest number of deaths caused by the virus Wednesday, at 45, raising the death toll since the pandemic began in Wisconsin to 1,897. The highest number of deaths on a given day was recorded on Tuesday, at 64.

The DHS noted on social media that Crawford County experienced its first death caused by the coronavirus on Wednesday.

As has been the case since late August and early September, the percent positivity continues to climb. DHS recorded a seven-day average percent positive (by test) of 14 percent Wednesday, and a seven-day percent positive (by person) of 27.2 percent - both records.

At least 164,726 people have recovered from the virus, 78.4 percent of all cases, including people with the virus right now.

At least 174 people were hospitalized due to the virus Wednesday, according to DHS numbers.

There are just over 43,400 active cases in Wisconsin.
