A petition to create a mask mandate for all of Wisconsin has gotten 8,000 signatures in just about one day.

The proposal was made by Senator Chris Larson.

"The tremendous support we have received for a statewide mask mandate has been overwhelming. What some might think is the absolute least we can do is also the simplest, most effective way for us to control the spread of COVID-19 and give us a fighting chance to open schools safely this academic year," the Senator said.

As of Monday, 48,827 people have tested positive for COVID-19 in Wisconsin. 892 people have died. 817,549 tests have come back negative.

"This mandate should apply to all publicly accessible buildings, including all workplaces, parks, schools, places of worship, and private businesses. Mask-wearing outdoors should be mandated in situations where people not living in the same household are likely to come within six feet of one another," the petition said.

This comes at the same time that Chicago put Wisconsin on its growing travel advisory list.

As for enforcement, Larson proposes that it should be left up to local health departments with fines, suspension, and loss of business licenses as consequences for not following the mandate. It also says that police should not be used as the enforcers of this mandate.
