BAY VIEW — Local businesses are hurting right now, amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

The public want sto know how you can help and that's why TMJ4 launched We’re Open.

TMJ4 met with three local business owners who say they need your support now more than ever.

“From last week when the concern started we’re down about 50-percent,” said Howie Duncan, owner of Suburpia.

The Duncans' say they are not concerned about losing half of their business. They are more focused on making sure their 20 employees do not have to be laid off.

“For the next two weeks or a month were not going to take our own pay out of the business so hopefully we can still keep some of our employees working… if possible," Howie said.

With slower foot traffic at their Milwaukee, Wauwatosa and Pewaukee locations, they are relying on carryout only orders to keep running.

Restaurants that provide carry out and delivery are considered essential during Governor Tony Evers' “Safer at Home” order, and are allowed to stay open.

This includes Kurt Schultz Deli & Pastry shop in Brown Deer. The owner says business is down about 35-percent.

“We’re all spacing ourselves out in the kitchen,” said owner Brian Kennedy about maintaining a safe social distance.

Along with carryout orders, they are now offering free delivery on the food they make each morning. This includes pastries and their famous German potato salad.

“On a normal weekday we would fill our dining room full but we do not have that ability to do that right now,” said Kennedy, “For us, knocking on wood we can last through it.”

In Bay View, the owner of Community Bark Dog Wash & Groom says she had to lay off her eight employees. She says business is down 95-percent.

To keep afloat, owner Mary Kilpatrick has expanded her dog food deliveries to owners in our area who need to feed their pets.

“Absolutely we will reopen I’m confident in that thats why I’m encouraging people to buy gift cards as well," said Kilpatrick.

While we need to stay away from each other at this time, this is one way we can come together: To rally around businesses and their employees who need us now more than ever.
