HOUSTON – Pewaukee native and current Houston Texans defensive end J.J. Watt was named Sports Illustrated's co-Sportsman of the Year.

Watt shared the award this year with Houston Astros second baseman Jose Alutve.

The award is given annually to an athlete or athletes who best personify athletic achievement and sportsmanship on and off the field.

In Sports Illustrated's release, they explained Watt and Altuve's impact on the city of Houston. "The stories of these two athletes who care represent two very different paths, but they led to the same destination: #HoustonStrong. Congratulations to J.J. Watt and José Altuve, our 2017 Sportsperson of the Year honorees."

After Hurricane Harvey hit Houston in August, Watt started a fundraiser to help those affected by the devastating flooding in the area. In less than three weeks, Watt raised more than $37 million.

The award was announced live on Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon Monday night.  You can see Fallon's announcement below.

Watt has been on injured reserve since week 5 of this NFL season when he broke his leg against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Watt discussed his injury with Fallon and says he is feeling great from recovering this surgery.

Watt also told The Associated Press on Monday, saying he's confident he'll return for the Texans next season.
