Pregame story

Is this Green Bay Packers team still a contender, or is it a falling star without their star quarterback, Aaron Rodgers?

Tonight may determine the answer as the Packers host the Detroit Lions in the longest continuously played rivalry in the NFL.

After Brett Hundley's first start turned into a subpar day of conservative quarterbacking against the New Orleans Saints, the Packers have had 15 days to change Hundley's game plan.

"I think (a different quarterback) changes any playcaller's approach. You call the game to utilize your players," said Coach Mike McCarthy Thursday on WTMJ's "Wisconsin's Morning News."

"We have a system of offense that is built around making the quarterback successful. That has always been here regardless of who the quarterback is. That is no different this week with Brett Hundley. We have to make sure we get the football to our playmakers and attack this defense."

The Packers' own defense, however, needs to improve its performance - particularly when it comes to creating turnovers and in getting off the field on third down, as Wayne Larrivee explains in our video player and in his own game podcast preview below.

For Green Bay to have any realistic chance to be in position to make a playoff run should Aaron Rodgers come back in December - IF he does - this may be a must-win contest.

It is a very possible win, which makes it that kind of must-win game.

Stay tuned. This one is big.
