Due to the pandemic many Americans are revisiting their love of gardening and harvesting their own food at home. But did you know there is a way to grow ingredients full of vitamin C, vitamin K, and magnesium from inside your home? Maria Viall joins us today to talk about growing sprouts, lentils and beans...inside!
For seeds:
Start with 2 tbsp of seeds
Rinse thoroughly and drain.
Place in mason jar and cover with metal screen lid.
Rinse and drain with a little water three times a day.
It helps to have it rest at an angle on your counter top somewhere dry and cool.
Repeat rinse and drain for about 3-4 days.
You will see the sprouts starting to pop out of the seeds by day 2.
Once the jar is full of sprouts, rinse and drain one more time and let it “dry out” in the sunlight for an hour or so.
Store in refrigerator and use within a week.
For beans/grains/lentils:
Start with 1 cup and soak in filtered water over night.
Drain the water out and place in mason jar or in a wide shallow baking dish.
Rinse and drain three times a day.
Repeat for 3-5 days.
Once the grain/lentil/bean start to grow little sprout tails, you can rinse one more time and then let them “dry out” in some sunlight for an hour.
Store in an airtight Tupperware in the refrigerator.
Use on top of salads, soups, in wraps, smoothies or sandwiches to add some delicious flavor and power packed nutrients!
