MILWAUKEE — At the House of Corned Beef, they like to say they're the best in town when it comes to serving up their famous corned beef sandwich. Wajeeh Alturkman has been serving his signature sandwich for twelve years. When the pandemic hit, he gave his employees a voice in the crucial decision of that moment.

"When the pandemic started, I had a meeting with me and my employees," recalls Alturkman. "I left it up to them, and we decided to stay open."

Alturkman points out why he thinks his corned beef sandwich is a cut about the rest.

"We bring it in from out of state," he explains. "The meat is processed in a very selective way. The perfect corned beef sandwich should melt in your mouth. "What's the old saying, 'you don't need teeth to eat my beef.' If the beef is not melting in somebody's mouth, there is a problem."

And even while times are tough, Alturkman is moved to reach out and help his community.

"We felt we were obligated to help some families who need some resources," he says. "We are giving food for the kids, whoever brings their kids to the House of Corned beef between two and four o'clock Monday through Friday.
