MADISON (NBC 26) -- School districts in Wisconsin could get a waiver for state mandated hour requirements as schools close to prevent the spread of coronavirus.
On Monday, the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction announced new guidelines for schools addressing the recent closures. DPI said it will waive a state mandated hour requirement to districts requesting to do so during the ongoing public health emergency.
Districts will still need to file a waiver, per state law, but the DPI said it will work to ensure an expedited process.
DPI also said it will work with the Wisconsin State Legislature and Gov. Tony Evers around suspending state testing requirements this spring. DPI also said students from economically-disadvantaged families will have access to school meals during school closures, as the DPI’s requested waiver to the U.S. Department of Agriculture was approved.
