Man accused of killing Lake Mills firefighter in drunk driving crash released on signature bond

A 28-year-old Columbus man was released on signature bond Thursday despite accusations that he was drunk when he crash and killed a Lake Mills firefighter on New Year's Eve.

Our sister station in Madison WISC-TV reportsthe man was assigned a $5,000 signature bond on Thursday, which he would have to pay if he misses any court dates.

His first court date is scheduled for March 7 for a bail/bond hearing.

Monona police arrested the man on tentative charges of homicide by intoxicated use of a vehicle. He reportedly crashed into Capt. Chris Truman on the Yahara River bridge on the Madison Beltline.

The fire captain had stopped to help a driver that lost control of her car in the snow.
