A Waukesha County woman is sharing her journey, from homelessness to helping the homeless find resources and a place to stay.

Heather Garcia is a caseworker for Community Action Coalition. 30 years ago, she was living on the streets after escaping an abusive marriage.

"I remember sitting in my car and I was scared and I was heartbroken, and I remember saying if ever I could make somebody not feel the way I feel right now I'm going to do it," Garcia said.

She recently won a Wisconsin Social Service Association award for excellence in human services. Garcia wants others to know that being homeless does not have to define a future.

"They know they're not alone they know they can share their story and know I understand."

The Community Action Coalition helps the homeless with rehousing, eviction prevention, and transitional housing. You can contact them at (262) 354-4017.
