Gunman at California hospital shot by police; no others hurt

A gunman was shot at the Bakersfield Heart Hospital in Bakersfield, California on Friday evening.

Officials locked down the hospital at about 5 p.m. local time Friday. Agents with the Federal Bureau of Investigation were called out to the hospital.

23ABC News TV station in Bakersfield was told the gunman came in through the emergency room exit into the Emergency Room of the Bakersfield Heart Hospital.

A caller from inside the hospital called 23ABC News and told the station about the shooting.

Ronnie Nop, who was visiting family in the ICU of the Bakersfield Heart Hospital on the 2nd floor on the south side of the Heart Hospital told 23ABC News that he saw the shooter ran outside into the parking lot at some point below the window where he was.

He did not see any gunfire but said he saw the shooter being placed on the stretcher outside of his window and being wheeled inside.

Officials said the suspect shot through the emergency room window and made his way into the hospital. 

A security officer made contact with the man, but there was no exchange of gunfire.

The man then made his way outside the hospital, where a shooting between the BPD officers and the shooter, according to Greg Terry Assistant Chief with the BPD.

Terry said the man was shot and taken to the Bakersfield Heart Hospital and then transferred to another area hospital.

The Bakersfield Police Department said that the hospital was cleared and no other individuals were shot aside from the suspect. The Bakersfield Police Department is continuing the investigation and requests the community avoid responding to the Heart Hospital at this time.

CEO of the Bakersfield Heart Hospital Michelle Oxford said that no staff members or patients of the hospital were injured during the shooting.

Terry said that the shooting between the BPD and the gunman happened within 2 minutes of the officers arriving at the hospital.

Terry said that the shooter was last listed in stable condition.
