State school officials urge districts to go virtual during coronavirus pandemic

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction said there shouldn't be any school sending work home with a student, without any communication or contact with teachers or school staff.

The state is encouraging schools to layout a virtual learning plan so that there's no break down in education.

DPI doesn't mandate how schools make up their lost instruction time, but they said if schools have a virtual learning curriculum, they don't need to add minutes to the end of the school year.

Janice Mertes is in charge of virtual learning with the state agency. She's been in touch with dozens of districts throughout our state.

Walking them through what this separation of student and teacher will look like as schools close across the state amid growing coronavirus concerns.

"We are actually more prepared than other states to talk about this as a learning option. Under our statutes for schools, they have flexible learning design that may be enhanced with digital technology tools," Mertes said.

She explains virtual learning doesn't mean kids sit in front of a computer all day, and parents don't buy supplies or provide content.

Teachers come up with interactive lectures and videos to keep the learning going.

If the district is concerned about not having the resources to implement a virtual learning plan, the DPI says to reach out to them.

"I'm not saying a district couldn't do this. I'm thinking they need to understand the possibilities," Mertes said.

School changes have families scrambling

"There may be variance in the next couple of weeks of how districts implement this, but they also know that potentially this isn't a window that this could continue not only this school year but next school year, so districts are taking this very seriously," Mertes said.

Many districts are starting to have teachers report to get trained on virtual learning. With all the coronavirus updates coming in so quickly, this shift is happening fast.
