The loss of a beloved dog is never easy, but we can imagine that some circumstances make it even tougher.

A viral photo shows a North Carolina Air Force sergeant saying farewell to his K9 partner, Bodza, who has a flag draped over him.

According WSOC-TV, Bodza was paired with Staff Sgt. Kyle Smith for four deployments, while also providing security for many U.S. officials.

But Bodza grew sick over the past few months, enduring so much pain and suffering that the decision was made to put him down.

Smith told WSOC he gave his pal one final meal at McDonalds – a Big Mac, of which Smith says he “didn’t leave a crumb.”

Smith was there by Bodza’s side as he was put down.

“I hugged him and told him that I loved him a lot, 'I’m gonna miss you,'” Smith told WSOC of the heartbreaking moment.
