The YMCA of Greater Waukesha County is giving parents an option when their kids have a snow day.

The School's Out Fun Day is a chance for parents to send their kids somewhere safe and warm when they don't have the luxury of taking a day off.

"It's rough when you have to try to figure out what you're going to do," said Jenny Fremgen, child care director for the YMCA of GWC. "Many times, parents are needed to go to work. They don't have the option to take a snow day themselves."

The five YMCA locations in Waukesha County all offer the service on unexpected days off, such as snow days and cold days when schools close. They also have several scheduled occasions when schools have off but businesses typically don't, such as Presidents Day. It costs $32 for members of the YMCA and $40 for non-members. It runs from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m., and kids need a packed lunch but they provide a snack.

"This is a big thing for them to get to come, especially when it's cold outside." — Erin Michelfelder, aquatics director at YMCA of Greater Waukesha County

The day is structured much like a typical school day, though the kids won't know that.

"They do crafts, work on projects in the classroom as well as go into the gym and play gym games," said Laurie Schlitt, executive director of the YMCA of GWC. "We also have an aquatic center for them to play in the water."

"This is a big thing for them to get to come, especially when it's cold outside," said Erin Michelfelder, aquatics director. "They have that opportunity to get more energy out in a different setting."
