The TODAY’S TMJ4 Community Baby Shower is Friday, January 22, 2016. One local organization got a head start by collecting baby items early.

The Elm Grove Woman’s Club meets inside a quaint, beautiful building in Elm Grove. The club has a history of volunteerism, and this year, the women opened their hearts for babies in need.

“Most of us are Grammies. Who doesn’t love little baby things?” said Betty Jo, who’s one of those Grammies. “I know how much you need diapers and wipes. I’ve used them. I take care of those kids on Mondays."

This year, the club collected baby items including diapers, wipes and clothing. Many of the blankets and booties are hand-made.

Alice Hirt spearheaded the effort as a thank you for a speech TODAY’S TMJ4 anchor Susan Kim gave to the club. Kim has hosted the Community Baby Shower since its infancy, 14 years ago.

“It was two-fold. Something for you, and something for the community, too,” Hirt said. “I think it’s awesome. It’s wonderful the women came through.”

In addition to the baby items, the ladies donated nearly $500 that will go to one of the Community Baby Shower organizations.
