West Bend alderman dies after accidentally shooting himself while hunting, police say

WASHINGTON ISLAND — Alderman Steve E. Hoogester, 65 of West Bend, died while hunting on Washington Island last weekend, police say.

A preliminary investigation from the Wisconsin DNR concluded that Hoogester accidentally shot himself while exiting a ground blind around 5 p.m. Sunday. He was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident, according to Washington Island police.

Alderman Hoogester represented District Six of the West Bend Common Council.

Hoogester graduated from Germantown High School in 1973 and served in the West Bend Police Department for 34 years, eventually reaching the rank of lieutenant, accordingto the Washington County Insider. Hoogester was elected to the West Bend Common Council in 2013.
