These scams come around this time every year and We Energies is reminding customers that the company is not disconnecting residential utilities, especially during the pandemic.

Recently, We Energies customers, specifically in the Burlington, Waterford and Mukwonago areas, have seen an increase in scam calls claiming to be from the utility company.

The scammers pretend to be from We Energies, demanding customers pay hundreds of dollars via the payment app Zelle, or they'd risk disconnection.

This scam has cost customers thousands of dollars, according to We Energies.

We Energies would like to remind customers that they will never demand you to make payments through apps like Zelle or request you to purchase gift cards of any kind.

If you're in doubt of a scam, hang up and call We Energies, not the number you received the initial call from.
