UW-Milwaukee faculty approve no confidence vote

MILWAUKEE -- More than 300 UW-Milwaukee faculty squeezed into a cramped room Tuesday afternoon and unanimously approved a vote of no confidence in UW System President Ray Cross and the UW Board of Regents.

The vote means that they have little or no confidence that Cross and the board can lead the UW System in difficult times. They say cuts to funding are making college unaffordable. Many are also upset over recent changes to the tenure system.

Governor Scott Walker sent out a news release just before the vote was cast, writing "spending at UW-Milwaukee is up more than 40 percent...We want to preserve the world-renowned quality of the UW System while protecting students and taxpayers."

While the vote is only symbolic, other campuses including Madison, River Falls, and La Crosse have made similar votes.
