The arctic temperatures have heating and cooling companies like K Komfort working overtime. The company expects to have at least 100 calls just in the next two days.

Tracy Headman and her son Cyril are one of the calls before the expected rush. They are bundled up just to sit inside their house.

"It's been a pretty long day without heat," said Headman.

They woke up to their 30 year old furnace breaking down.

"That furnace was not able to keep up no matter what we did with it," said Jay Eisenhauer of K Komfort Heating and Cooling.

Eisenhauer said they are expecting a lot of calls for furnace problems. But if yours is not working there are some things to check first.

  • Check the batteries in your thermostat
  • Check to see if the filter needs to be changed
  • Check to see if the exhaust pipe is clear outside

If you are without heat and need to wait for a technician it could take a little while. So there are ways to help keep the heat in.

Keep the garage closed and limit going in and out

  • Draw Your Blinds
  • Open all your vents
  • Turn on the furnace fan to blow out any hot air
  • Turn on the faucets

"Crack a couple of faucets to make sure you have proper water flow. You don't want to take one situation with HVAC and turn it into a plumbing issue as well with all your pipes frozen," said Eisenhauer.

Headman even got some space heaters as they waited for their repair. But they are happy if it the heat had to break it happened Monday.

"If it would have been tomorrow or the next day it would have been terrible," said Headman.
