WHITEFISH BAY – Two teens are in custody after breaking into a Whitefish Bay home, stealing cars, and leading police on a chase into Milwaukee early Wednesday morning.
It happened near Diversey and Chateau in Whitefish Bay.
"I feel the neighborhood is safe," said Joanne Turk, who lives nearby. "But it is upsetting that someone would be prowling around."
Whitefish Bay Police tell TODAY’S TMJ4 the suspects were going through an unlocked car in a front driveway of home and found house keys.
Police say a suspect used the keys to get into the home and found car keyfobs inside. The suspect and several other males got into the cars and drove away.
A resident called 911 as the cars were pulling out of the driveway. Whitefish Bay Police then began pursuing the fleeing stolen cars.
One of the stolen cars crashed in the area of N 14th and W Keefe. The other was found abandoned at W. Glendale Road and N. Green Bay in an alley.
Two 15-year-old suspects were then taken into custody. Police say they will seek charges of burglary and attempted to elude officers.
"I heard a loud 'boom' and thought, 'oh no! our cars?' I thought they hit our cars," said a neighbor at 14th and Keefe named Emilie.
She said speeding and reckless driving is a constant problem in the area.
"I've got anxiety living here. The driving is horrible," she said.
Whitefish Bay Police are again reminding residents to take keys out of their cars and also to lock all cars and homes.
