MILWAUKEE — While many school districts decided to call a snow day,not included on the list Wednesday were Milwaukee Public Schools.

MPS released a statement, saying why it made the decision.

"Milwaukee Public Schools is open January 23, 2019. The decision to close or remain open due to weather is never an easy one. The primary focus is always the safety and well-being of our students and staff. This decision was made by MPS administration in consultation with surrounding school districts, the Department of Public Works and Milwaukee County Transit System.
"Decisions on possible closures are not made lightly and MPS takes into account how this may affect all children, families and staff. MPS respects the decision of families to keep their children at home due to the weather. We ask that families call their school to inform them of the decision."

Parents who dropped off students at Milwaukee High School of the Arts say the road conditions were sloppy.

“Why didn’t you do a snow day today? Today would have been a perfect day for a snow day,” asked frustrated MPS parent Michael Frazier.

Others were more understanding, as the snow shut on and off in Milwaukee in the morning.

“I don’t mind it being open,” MPS parent Katrina Jones said.

“I don’t know exactly how they determine it,” MPS parent Pam Halfmann said.

They add they will still worry.

“I’m concerned about the kids on the bus stops,” added Jones.

“[Milwaukee Public School of the] Arts doesn’t let out until 2:45 p.m. My daughter is not going to get out until at least 5 p.m.,” said Frazier.

We have asked to see the total attendance for today.
