As we continue to deal with this first sustained outbreak of bitter cold, there are some things you can do to cope.

A lot of us are facing an icy windshield in the morning, but instead of scraping as you shiver you can make it easier on yourself – not by buying a costly spray in the store, but by making one yourself.

Mix one part water with two parts rubbing alcohol and you’re all set.

This works because the freezing point of alcohol is much lower than ice – so the ice draws heat from the alcohol leading to a melt.

The spray easily takes care of your windows – but it can handle other issues as well. For instance – if your garage door gets stuck – just spray along the edge to loosen it.

It’s an inexpensive and easy solution based on science.
