Residents enjoy record setting temperatures at Miller Park, beer garden

Getting the warm weather in while they can
Posted

It happens every year: hundreds of Brewers fans line at Miller Park the moment individual tickets go on sale.

But for once, it's no "Arctic Tailgate." Instead, it's crop-top weather.

"This is the warmest one on record, that is for sure," said Eric Devens.

Eric Devens got to Miller Park at noon on Friday, and spent nearly 24 hours in the parking lot to make sure he gets opening day tickets. He's been doing this for ten years, and he's not alone.

"This is my fourth time camping out here," said Paul Daney.

In the age of online ticket buying, you have to wonder, why do they do it?

"It's a fun experience," Devens said. "The thrill of being able to camp outside of Miller Park in the middle of February."

"We hang out, party, drink beer, eat," Daney said. "I guess that makes it a lot like a Brewers game."

Not far away in Wauwatosa, something you normally only see during the prime of baseball season, was happening. Hoyt Park's Beer Garden opened up to a long line of people.

"It's a beautiful day to be out and about, and lo and behold we got a pop-up beer garden here," said John Jeffery. "It's like summer. Very early. The beer tastes even better with the sun shining, outside in February."

It's a strange sight for Wisconsin in mid-February: kids on the playground, picnics, bikers, runners and volleyball players in shorts and t-shirts.

But they know not to get used to it.

"We might be sledding next weekend, so we're getting it in now," said Mark Hughes.

"It's Wisconsin, it could be 60 now, and by next week or tomorrow we could be dealing with three feet of snow," Jeffery said.
