This week is Winter Weather Week and now is the time to start protecting your pets from the upcoming cold winter season.
Dr. Noah Arnold, a veterinarian at Dr. Noah's Ark Veterinary Clinic, cares for animals every day and he would like to remind pet owners to use preventative heartworm care along with tick preventative because dogs can transmit intestinal parasites to humans in winter months.
He says as the weather gets colder, it's important to know your pet.
"One of my dogs was swimming in Lake Michigan when it was like 20 degrees outside so it doesn't bother her too much," said dog owner Corey Schmidt.
According to Dr. Noah, pets that have less hair should spend fewer minutes outside than fluffy pets that can be outside for longer periods of time.
This winter Dr. Noah offers these 3 tips:
1. Don't leave your pets outside when it's cold.
2. Increase food for pets that spend more time outside and decrease food for less time spent outside.
3. Remember to wipe the salt off your dog's paw pads.
