RACINE COUNTY — A routine traffic stop near Braun Road in Mount Pleasant by a Racine County Sheriff's Deputy turned into a high-speed chase that resulted in a drug bust Monday evening, the Racine County Sheriff's Office said.
Originally, a Deputy pulled over a 49-year-old Illinois resident for driving 90 mph in a 70 mph zone northbound on Interstate 94. When the deputy approached the car, he recognized the smell of marijuana. Once the deputy told the driver about the smell coming from his car, the man drove off, officials said.
The deputy chased the 49-year-old Illinois resident for a short time. Speeds exceeded 100 mph during the chase.
Eventually, the man pulled into a closed business parking lot in Mount Pleasant. He exited his car and yelled at the deputy. After multiple attempts at trying to calm him down, the deputy used his Taser to bring down the suspect and take him into custody.
According to the police report, 93 capsules of "an illegal schedule I narcotic" were found in the car.
The man is currently in the Racine County Jail.
