RACINE -- A Racine man is behind bars charged with felony mistreatment of animals. He’s accused of beating his 10-month-old puppy with a pipe to the point of disfigurement.

Court documents detail the abuse he suffered at the hands of his owner Terrance Howard —who admits he beat the dog for going through the trash.

Witnesses said they saw Howard pound rocky with his fists punch him, and even throw him against the side of a home —and when we was rescued last week, investigators noticed deep cuts on rocky’s head and above his right eye which could now cost thousands of dollars in medical bills.

According to Angela Speed with the Wisconsin Humane Society, if it weren’t  for witnesses calling the police Rocky may have eventually been beaten to death.

"It was just a cruel act of blatant animal abuse that should have never happened to this poor dog. He’s just a puppy and his owner, just out of control, was beating his dog," she continued.

Howard could face up to three and a half years behind bars if found guilty.

Anyone who sees animal abuse is encouraged to call 911.

Donations for Rocky are being encouraged to cover the cost of his care and can be made at wihumane.org/donate or by calling 414-431-6119.
