MILWAUKEE -- It's down to five.
Organizers of the People's Flag of Milwaukee have unveiled the five finalists in its contest to redesign Milwaukee's flag. A panel of judges narrowed it down from more than 1,000 entires.
The People's Flag of Milwaukee Initiative is a program by Greater Together, a non-profit organization that promotes racial and economic equity in the creative industries in the Greater Milwaukee area.
They want the flag to represent the Milwaukee of today; where we are going and what we want Milwaukee to become.
Greater Together feels the current flag -- which has been around since 1955 -- has offensive imagery and it has a building on it that no longer exists.
"A new flag will give us a rallying point to imagining a greater Greater Milwaukee," said Greater Together Associate Director Katherine Wilson.
The final design will be chosen by the public in an online vote. Judges said to consider simplicity and symbolism, visibility at a distance and uniqueness in your decision.
Greater Together plans to mass produce the winning designs and have it flying this summer. The winning design will be revealed on Flag Day, June 14.
