TOWN OF VERNON - A home nearly burned to the ground after an apparent explosion.

It happened just after 3:00 a.m. in the Town of Vernon in Waukesha County.

Fire officials confirmed a 28-year-old man was taken to the hospital by flight for life.   He was the sole occupant of the home.

“There [were] lights flashing in the window, every window," Terri Willmann said. "It’s crazy up there, I got pictures of it… it’s down to the ground."

Willmann’s pictures show the aftermath of her neighbor’s blue home that’s now partially burned to the ground with little left to salvage, but Willmann said it was the sound of a siren, not the fire that woke her up out of her sleep early Monday morning.

“It was freaky… it was very freaky," Willmann explained.

But for neighbor Courtny Kelly, it was a different sound that interrupted her sleep.

“It sounded like a loud bang," Kelly explained.

A bang so loud she says it shook her home and left debris and mementos from the blue house scattered across her yard.

"This is absolutely terrifying," Kelly said. "I just want everyone to be okay."

The Waukesha Sheriff's Department is leading the investigation on this fire.
