WAUKESHA -- Waukesha police say officers shot and wounded a man who pointed a rifle at them.

Police say they got a call from the man's girlfriend about 9 p.m. Sunday who was concerned about his welfare. She told dispatchers that he possibly had a rifle in his possession, had been drinking and had a history of suicide attempts.

Responding officers spotted the man near his house pointing a rifle at them. Three officers shot the man after he refused commands to drop the rifle. He was taken into custody less than a block away. Police say he had the rifle in his possession.

He was taken to Waukesha Memorial Hospital and was expected to survive. No officers were injured.
