MILWAUKEE — An outpouring of community support continues for the Rittner family as the public is invited to join the family in honoring the life of Officer Matthew Rittner.

Near 47th and Vliet, a snow-covered memorial remains outside the Milwaukee Police Department’s Neighborhood Task Force building — it’s a symbol of love and appreciation for Rittner, who was killed one week ago.

Eric Polenski didn’t want to speak on camera, but he drove from Oak Creek to the memorial to clear snow from the squad. He said it’s the least he can do to honor the life of a veteran police officer and former Marine who was shot and killed in the line of duty.

It’s also near 47th and Vliet that family members of other officers gathered Wednesday morning, and with heavy hearts, they boarded a bus to Oak Creek where they’ll join the Rittner family for a final goodbye.
